Photoshop Learning: Step by Step

Below you will find a list of tutorials that will help you get started using Adobe Photoshop or you may also watch the video for step by step process. Before going through the tutorials, it’s helpful to know how to create and save documents.

Use the “New” command to create a new, blank image. (Shortcut Keys: Ctrl+N)

1. Choose File > New.
Now, you will see “New” window (e.g. Name, Preset, Width, Height, Resolution, Color Mode, Background Contents and the info for image size.)

2. If desired, type a name for the image, and set the width and height.
Notice: ***If you’ve copied a selection to the clipboard, the image dimensions and resolution are automatically based on that image data.

3. To match the width and height of the new image to that of any open image, choose a file name from the bottom section of the Windows menu.
(Photoshop) Set the resolution and mode.

4. Select an option for the contents of the background layer or first layer of the image:

•    “White” fills the background or first layer with white, the default background color.
•    “Background Color” fills the background or first layer with the current background color.
•    “Transparent” makes the first layer transparent, with no color values. The resulting document has a single, transparent layer as its contents.

5. Under Advanced, (this is optional):

•    You may choose a color profile, or choose “Don’t Color Manage This Document”.
•    For Pixel Aspect Ratio, choose Square unless you’re using the image for video. In that case, choose another option to use non-square pixels.

6. When you finish, you can save the settings as a preset by clicking Save Preset, or you can click “OK” button to open the new file.

Use the “Save as…” command to save the new image. (Shortcut Keys: Shift+Ctrl+S)

1. Choose File > Save as…
Now, you will see the dialog box for “Save as…” command. (e.g. Save in, File Name, format, Save Options)

3. For file “Format” option you may choose any of the following extension. But, I prefer you to use “TIFF(*.TIF,*.TIFF) to be able to save each detail of the image.

2. At “Save Options” please check the “Layers” checkbox and “Use Lower Case Extension”
Warning: *** NEVER flatten something unless you are SURE you are never going to want to edit this image again. Flattening is forever!

3. When you finish, you can click “Save” button to save the file.
